What is Skip Logic?
Skip logic (also called conditional branching) lets you control which questions a respondent sees based on how they answered earlier questions. Instead of showing every respondent every question, Opinio routes each person through only the questions that are relevant to them — resulting in a faster, more focused experience and higher completion rates.
For example: if a respondent answers "No" to "Do you own a car?", all follow-up questions about car usage are automatically skipped. Combine skip logic with answer piping to build fully dynamic, personalised surveys.
How Branching Works in Opinio
- •Question-level conditions — attach a condition to any question so it is shown only when the condition is true.
- •Page-level branching — skip entire pages and jump directly to a later page, keeping the survey short for respondents who don't need those sections.
- •Multiple condition operators — equals, not equals, contains, does not contain, greater than, less than, is answered, is not answered.
- •AND / OR logic — combine multiple conditions for precise control: "show this question only if answer A equals X AND answer B is greater than 3."
- •Works with all question types — conditions can be based on single-choice, multiple-choice, rating, numeric, text, date, and matrix questions.
- •Forward branching only — branches always skip forward to a later question or page, ensuring respondents always move toward the end of the survey.
Visual Branching Diagram
The Opinio editor includes a visual branching diagram that gives you a bird's-eye view of every conditional path in your survey. You can verify that the flow is correct before publishing.
Practical Examples
- •Customer satisfaction — ask follow-up "why?" questions only when a respondent gives a low rating.
- •Product research — route respondents to product-specific question sets based on which product they selected.
- •HR surveys — show department-specific questions only to members of that department.
- •Screening surveys — qualify respondents at the start and immediately end the survey for those who do not meet the criteria.
